The 4 Times Table
If you know how to double a number, this one is easy.
4 x 3 is 3 doubled = 6, then double 6 = 12, 4x3=12
2x3=6 6+6=12 (or 2x6=12)
4x5 2x5=10 10+10=20 (or 2x10=20) 4x5=20
4x7 2x7=14 14+14=28 (or 2x14=28) 4x7=28
4x12 2x12=24 24+24=48 (or 2x24=48) 4x12=48
if you think about it 2x2=4, that is why this works.

6's multiplication trick
When multiplying 6's by even numbers they both end with the same number.
6x2=12, 6x4=24, 6x6=36, 6x8=48 6x10=60, 6x12=72, 6x14=84 and so on.

11's Multiplication tricks
There are two rules when multiplying by 11 (eleven).
The first 11 Times Rule:
This is for the numbers 1-9
When multiplying any single digit number by 11 you just write that number twice.
Multiply 11 by 3 to get 33, multiply 11 by 4 to get 44. Each number to 10 is just duplicated.
The second 11 Times Rule:
This is for any two digit number
You are going to take the two digits of your number add them together, and put the sum in between the two digits you started with.
For example: if you take 11 x 18. Jot down 1 and 8 with a space between it. 1 8.
The sum of 1+8=9, do put the 9 in between the 1 and 8.
so you get 198.
12 x 11 1 2 1+2=3 132 12 x 11=132
15 x 11 1 5 1+5=6 165 15 x 11=16511's

9's Multiplication trick
So we need to learn our nines times tables. Well here is a little trick that might help.

- Hold your hands in front of you with your fingers spread out, your palm toward you.
- For whichever number you are multiplying by 9, count over that many fingers. For 9 X 3 count from the left and bend your third finger (your left middle finger) down. 9 X 4 would be the fourth finger (left hand ring finger), 9 X 7 would be the 7th finger (ring finger on your right hand) etc.)
- Now count the fingers that are up before the finger you bent over, that's your tens place, and the fingers up on the right side of your finger bent over is in the ones place. For 3 X 9 you have 2 fingers in front of the bent finger and 7 after the bent finger. (7 X 9, you have 6 fingers in front of the bent finger and 3 after the bent finger.)
- Thus the answer must be 27. (Answer, 63)

Back to school
School is just about upon us now, and the first few days and weeks of school can really make or brake the whole year. As parents there is something that we can do to help our kids be totally prepared for school this month.
1. Schedule -School schedule and summer schedule always seem to be different, no matter how hard we try to keep some structure through the summer. Make sure we are getting to bed early and getting up at the time we would during school. This way we will be ready for school to start.
2. Learn about the teacher- Most teachers have websites and information that you could learn about the teacher and the class. There is normally a link on the school website to their (the teachers) site. Check it out you might find some interesting things.
3. Read- It is amazing how much kids slip in their reading levels when they DON'T read during the summer. If they haven't been reading much during the summer, get them reading 30 mins. a day. This will help them get "tuned" up for the start of school.
4. Practice Math skills- Same thing with our math facts, if we haven't been practicing our speed at recall is not going to be were they need to be when we get back to school.
Here is a site that they can play games and practice there math facts, along with a few other things. multiplication.com

Does your kid struggle with 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication?
Here is a little idea that might give some help.
We can call it box multiplication, and it will give us our partial products.
partial=part
Product= the answer to a multiplication problem.
So we will get the Partial products and then add them together.

Learning your basic facts
Basic facts are your 0's (zeros) and 1's. Now the basic facts that we are talking about
right now is addition. This still applies with multiplication though.
First you need to help your kids know that any number plus 0 is that number.
Remember that we want to keep these numbers under 10.
1+0=1; 2+0=2; 3+0=3; and so forth up to 10.
When your kid understands this and gets it right all the time move on to 1's.
(Note: your kids should be able to count fairly good at this point.)
When we move on to 1's we are just count up one. Remember to make this point that they are just counting by one when we add by one.
1+1=2; 1+2=3; 1+3=4; 1+4=5 and so forth up to 10.
Practice practice practice is what your kids need. Let them use their fingers there is nothing wrong with that, or use macaroni, beans or things like that.
Don't worry about subtraction at this point, your kids need to get this down first.

Help with Math homework and Reading skills
The more I teach and the more I listen to my wife as the parent there are two things that parents really care about in their child's education.
1-That they can read and that they are were they should be (level wise) and
2-they understand how to do math, and are up to par with it.
I hear a lot of parents say that they can't help their kids with their math homework because they don't know how to do it. In a way I find that a little funny to say, since they learned the same material, just 20-40 years ago.
So here I am to help with math and reading homework. I have made some adjustments in my thoughts and what to write about. Most of it will be on math and reading skills, and ideas that will help you as the parent.
Please send me your questions that you may have, and I will do my best to answer them.

Multiplication Finger Tricks
Some of us just need some help from our fingers. Hopefully this is for you.
It's a bit complicated to remember what to do, and some children would find it more trouble than it's worth! However a child who learns kinesthetically and has difficulty remembering anything by rote would probably grasp this quickly. So do try this with your children, even if it seems highly complex from your adult point of view.
Mentally (or with marker pen) number the thumbs as 6, index fingers as 7, middle fingers 8, ring fingers 9, little fingers 10. And define the thumbs as honorary fingers for the purposes of this 'manual calculator'.
To do any multiplication, from 6x6 through to 9x9, touch two fingers together which represent the numbers you want to multiply. For instance, for 7x8, touch index finger of one hand to middle finger of the other.
The remaining number of fingers on each hand - in this case 3 on one hand and 2 on the other - must be multiplied together to give the 'units' of the answer. 3x2 = 6.
The answer to 7x8 is five tens and six units, 50+6 = 56.
It sounds horrendous, but some children love it and it really works.
It works for every multiplication from 6x6 to 10x10 (not that you'd want such a complex method for multiplying by 10 - if you think you do, try reading the page on multiplication tricks).

Multiplying on fingers
Yes, it can be done. Multiplying on fingers is not as easy as adding or subtracting with the fingers, and you do need first of all to know how to multiply low numbers by 2, 3, 4 and 5. The two touching fingers and all the ones nearer to you than the ones touching are the 'tens' group. One minor point about multiplying on fingers
Sometimes the 'units' add up to more than 10, in which case the ten must be 'carried' and added onto the other tens. For instance, if you multiply 6x7, you will have 3 tens (2 thumbs and one finger), with 3 and 4 fingers respectively remaining, and 3x4 is 12. So either add 12 to 30 and don't worry about it being units, or carry the 10 mentally and add 40 to 2 - either way you get 42.It works for every multiplication from 6x6 to 10x10 (not that you'd want such a complex method for multiplying by 10 - if you think you do, try reading the page on multiplication tricks).

Multiply by 2: Add the number to itself
Anything multiplied by two must give an even number:
in other words, the last digit must be 2, 4, 6, 8 or 0.
Multiply by 3: It All Adds Up
Let's see if 3 has any special properties.
4 x 3 = 12 1 + 2 = 3
5 x 3 = 15 1 + 5 = 6
6 x 3 = 18 1 + 8 = 9
7 x 3 = 21 2 + 1 = 3
When you multiply by 3, the digits of the answer add up to 3, 6, or 9.
You can't really use this to multiply faster. But it is a quick way to check your work.
To quickly multiply by four, double the number and then double it again.

4 x 4 = 16. you must be 16 to drive a 4x4.
Multiply by 5: It's All 5s and 0s
Let's look at a few facts about 5. If you multiply a number by 5 it must end in 5 or 0.
2 x 5 = 10
3 x 5 = 15
4 x 5 = 20
5 x 5 = 25
6 x 5 = 30
7 x 5 = 35
See a pattern? If we multiply by an even number, the ones digit is 0. If the number's odd, the ones digit is 5. This trick is great to check your multiplication by 5.
Multiply by 6:
If you multiply 6 by an even number, they both end in the same digit.
Example: 6×2=12, 6×4=24, 6×6=36, etc
The rule doesn’t work for 6 times an odd number such as 6 x 3 = 18
Rhyme: 6 times 8 went on a date and didn’t come home ‘til they were 48.
6 times 9 is 54—shut your mouth and say no more.
6 x 6 is thirsty sixes
Multiply by 7:
Rhyme:
7x7 is San Francisco 49ers.
Five - six - seven - eight, Fifty-six is seven times eight.
Multiply by 8:
8 x 8 is Nintendo 64
Multiply by 9: It All Adds Up to 9

Multiply by 10: Just add 0
The easiest number to multiply by is 10. Just “add 0.”
3 x 10 = 30
140 x 10 = 1400
Multiply by 11: up to 9x11:
just repeat the digit (Example: 4x11 = 44)
for 10x11 to 18x11:
For this example we will use 11 x 54.
- Separate the two digits in you mind (5__4).
- Notice the hole between them!
- Add the 5 and the 4 together (5+4=9)
- Put the resulting 9 in the hole 594. That's it! 11 x 54=594
Multiply by 12:
Multiply the number by 10 then by 2 and add them together. For example 12 x 9 = ?
Multiply 9 by 10 = 90 and Multiply 9 by 2 = 18 then add 90 + 18 = 108 so 12 x 9 = 108

Times Tables
I am thinking that you kid might not like times tables that much. Well unfortunately they are not alone. I the thing that will help or hurt your kid in school, mostly from 3rd grade on is how well they know their times tables. Here is a game that they might like to play.
If you can get some 12 sided dice (regular dice will work as well, but 12 sided will be best because that is what they need to know, times tables up to 12). Here are some ideas. These big ones might be real fun.
Just some Ideas. Wal-mart defiantly would have the 6 sided dice, it a start. (that is if you don't already have dice.)
If I could name one thing that would help your child the most with math it would be their times tables.

Our Attidtude about math.
Do you like math? The chances of you saying yes is very slim. Most of us have grown up not liking math and hate having it for homework.
We grow up saying
"I am not good at math, I hate it." So, we go through school not liking it and not doing very good at it, BECAUSE we think we aren't very good. Why do we think this way, well what is your parents attitude about math. Do you remember what they used to say about it. It is most probally the exact same thing that you had said, or you do say.
Our kids grow up thinking about math the exact same way that we grew up thinking and think now. So If you would like to have your kids not have that attitude toward math, leave those feellings somewhere else when you are around your kids.
Be possitive about homework and math then your kids will have the same fellings and attitude about their homework and math.
Great learning to you.
